Post-infectious cough, commonly known as chronic cough, what is post-infectious cough?

Symptoms: persistent cough after a cold: irritating dry cough or cough with a small amount of mucus, phlegm in the throat, difficulty breathing, can last for 3 to 8 weeks or even longer, and cough is often aggravated at night. Chest X-ray examination is usually normal.

How does Chinese medicine interpret the above symptoms?

1: Post-infectious cough is a cough that persists about 3 weeks after any lung infection.

2: Irritating dry cough is caused by paroxysmal coughing due to changes in air temperature or prolonged talking, which irritates the pharynx. In mild cases, it may be a series of coughs, while in severe cases, it may cause vomiting and tears.

3: There is little phlegm when coughing, or there is phlegm in the throat when coughing, but it is difficult to cough up . The phlegm may be white or yellow, but the amount is generally small.

4. Coughing is more frequent and severe at night: due to tracheal contraction, the trachea is more sensitive. Traditional Chinese medicine diagnoses this as a cold cough and requires the prescription of Chinese medicine for tracheal dilation.

5. Some patients may have difficulty breathing and may even need to take a deep breath.

The above symptoms are all information that must be obtained when making a diagnosis. The more information you get, the clearer you will be about the patient's condition, and the more accurate you will be in choosing medicines. In addition, Chinese medicine diagnosis is holistic, and attention should be paid to all aspects of the body. Taking this disease as an example, Chinese medicine will pay more attention to the condition of the patient's heart, spleen, and large and small intestines. Cardiopulmonary circulation is an important part of the human body's circulation. Coughing will inevitably affect the function of the heart. Some patients with weaker heart function may be more affected and may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and dizziness. In addition, a considerable number of patients will experience gastrointestinal discomfort after infection, such as constipation or unformed stool, poor appetite, and tasteless mouth, which are closely related to the spleen, stomach, and large and small intestines. Poor gastrointestinal function, decreased digestion and metabolism, inability to eliminate pathological products such as moisture and phlegm, and delayed recovery of intestinal microecology also affect the recovery of immune function.

TCM treatment methods:

Chinese medicine can relax the trachea, resist allergies and clear away heat, such as Ephedra, Saposhnikovia, Oroxylum, Belamcanda, etc., and adding Chinese medicine that nourishes the heart, lungs and spleen according to the symptoms will make the effect better. According to the statistics of our clinic, more than 90% of patients have a significant reduction in cough within 7 days, and are basically cured within 14 days. It can be seen that Chinese medicine is very effective in treating cough after infection.
