How Chinese Medicine Practitioner Analyze an Electrocardiogram (ECG)?"

mawinglam

--------Traditional Chinese medicine has the ability to analyze electrocardiograms, improving the accuracy of clinical diagnosis

Modern medicine has developed different treatment and diagnosis methods based on physical phenomena such as force, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and heat. The accuracy of TCM diagnosis and treatment has also developed with the advancement of technology. For example, in the past, doctors could only make judgments by "looking" at the patient's external changes, such as the color of the tongue, tongue coating, and facial color. With the advancement of technology, some doctors will use X-rays, CT, and MRI test results to assist in diagnosis. These technologies are like the doctor's eyes "deep into" the patient's body, thereby making a more accurate diagnosis of the disease. In addition, blood pressure monitors are widely used in both Chinese and Western medical clinics. The instrument converts the pressure of blood flowing through the cuff into an electrical signal through the cuff pressure sensor to measure the pressure inside the blood vessels.

In treatment, doctors mostly use electroacupuncture devices, infrared lights or magnetic therapy. These technologies involving electricity, magnetism and heat were invented in the last half century and have improved the effectiveness of clinical treatment. Therefore, modern Chinese medicine practitioners have unconsciously absorbed contemporary technologies to improve their quality.

Therefore, Chinese medicine practitioners cannot be out of touch with modern technology in clinical practice.

Electrocardiogram is the most common method for diagnosing heart disease. By using electrodes attached to the body to detect the electrophysiological signals of the heart, it is possible to determine whether the patient has arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia, and even to make a preliminary diagnosis of myocardial hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, etc. Electrocardiogram diagnosis is based on electrocardiogram signals and can also be used by Chinese medicine practitioners. Take the following as an example:

The patient is a woman in her fifties with stage III hypertension, with long-term upper blood pressure of 160-180 and lower blood pressure of 90-100. She refuses to take blood pressure medicine. After catching a cold in September 2021, she often had difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and lack of energy. The attending Chinese medicine doctor recommended a heart examination. Her electrocardiogram signal indicated that the left ventricular muscle may be hypertrophic, which is very bad news for patients with hypertension. Due to myocardial hypertrophy, it may further develop into heart failure. Therefore, the results of the electrocardiogram affect the direction of treatment. The doctor decided to add Chinese medicine and acupuncture to strengthen the heart, blood, eliminate dampness, remove blood stasis, and regulate qi in addition to lowering blood pressure. At the same time, the patient was recommended to take blood pressure-lowering drugs prescribed by Western medicine first, and the treatment was carried out in a collaborative model of Chinese and Western medicine.

The Chinese medicine doctor's analysis of the electrocardiogram improved the diagnosis and prognosis of the patient's hypertension, which is very valuable in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Here is another example:

This female patient is over 60 years old. She has always had a fast and irregular pulse. The electrocardiogram showed that her heart rate was 93 beats/minute. The electrocardiogram diagnosed her with atrial fibrillation (abbreviated as AF). Traditional Chinese medicine does not have the concept of AF. There are only knot, alternating, and pulsating pulses for irregular pulses. However, none of the three fits the patient's pulse. In addition, if there are only knot, alternating, and pulsating pulses, it does not mean that heart disease can be diagnosed. However, AF can be diagnosed through an electrocardiogram. Because the electrical signals in the atria are abnormal, the rhythm of the heart's electrical conduction to the ventricles is affected, and the coordination of the atria's contraction is affected. Therefore, patients with atrial fibrillation are prone to blood congestion in the left atrial appendage, which is carried to the brain through blood vessels and may cause a stroke. Therefore, Western medicine will prescribe drugs to stabilize heart rhythm, such as BETA-BLOCKER, and will also prescribe blood vessel drugs such as aspirin. After understanding the exact diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, Chinese medicine practitioners can learn from the treatment direction of Western medicine. In addition to using Chinese medicine to stabilize heart rhythm, Chinese medicine that can dispel blood stasis and promote blood circulation should be added to enhance the efficacy and reduce the risk of stroke.
