What is a slow heartbeat or a fast heartbeat?

This is a type of arrhythmia. Arrhythmia is a common condition in TCM clinical diagnosis. The easier ones to diagnose are bradycardia and tachycardia. Bradycardia means less than 60 beats per minute (less than 50 beats per minute is generally accepted in Western medicine in Hong Kong), and tachycardia means more than 90 beats per minute. If other diseases (such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, diabetes, sick sinus syndrome, etc.) are excluded, and the electrocardiogram excludes the pathology of the cardiac conduction system, the general TCM syndrome differentiation method can be effective. If it is caused by heart disease or other organ diseases, it must be correctly diagnosed before syndrome differentiation and treatment. Therefore, Chinese medicine practitioners must not decide on treatment plans based solely on the speed of the heart rate. They must handle the case seriously and inquire about the patient's medical history in detail. Even if other diseases have been ruled out, they cannot be treated rashly. Long-term bradycardia or tachycardia may also cause other diseases, such as heart failure, cardiac arrest, stroke, pulmonary embolism, sudden cardiac death, etc.

Chinese medicine treatment

Simple bradycardia (or sinus bradycardia), most patients have symptoms such as easy fatigue, dizziness, lack of qi, poor concentration, irritability, edema, etc. The syndrome is mostly heart qi deficiency and yang deficiency, with the heart as the main problem, and the other four organs are also related. At this time, it can be treated through the principles of invigorating qi, warming yang, and unblocking the meridians. Commonly used Chinese medicines include: Astragalus, ginseng, Rhodiola rosea, Panax notoginseng, etc., and acupuncture and cupping can also be used to improve blood circulation to increase heart rate. Tachycardia (or sinus tachycardia), patients may have insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, palpitations, irritability, headache, dizziness, edema, etc. The syndrome is mostly heart yin and blood deficiency, which is also related to the other four organs. Commonly used Chinese medicines include: ginseng, Panax notoginseng, licorice root, Ophiopogon japonicus, Adenophora chinensis, Polygonatum odoratum, Lilium, etc. Tachycardia is closely related to emotions, because emotions affect the autonomic nervous system, which controls the pacemaker of the heartbeat (called the atrial and sinus node). Therefore, regulation of the autonomic nervous system is also one of the links in treatment.

I run a few kilometers every day, so a slow heart rate is normal, isn't it?

Professional athletes generally have a slower heart rate, and their electrocardiograms are different from those of normal people, which is called an athlete's electrocardiogram. The heart rate may be lower than 50 beats/minute without any discomfort. However, most patients with a heart rate of only about 50 beats/minute think that they exercise regularly and have a slower heart rate. However, the amount of exercise most people do is far less than that of professional athletes. At this time, we should not consider it as an athlete's heart rate for the time being, and everyone should pay attention. Furthermore, we often hear about sudden deaths or cardiac arrests of athletes. Does this mean that an athlete's heart does not necessarily represent health? It's just that in terms of data, a considerable number of athletes have abnormal electrocardiograms, so is it normal? It's worth thinking about.
